Two Working Structure Fires in One Day
Went to bed last night around 03:00 hours and was awoken this morning around 05:15 hours when the EMS pager went off for and accident with injuries in front of Giant. It ended up being in the parking lot of Giant. I was not on, but I listened to it anyway for awhile, and then I reset my pager and went back to sleep. The around 07:00 hours, Sue sent me a text message that they were still sitting at Giant waiting for the guy's wife to show up and pick him up to take him home. We sent a few messages back and forth and then the pager went off again for another call. Carol picked Bill up at Giant and they handled that call. About that same time Sue said the guy's wife showed up and picked him up and she went available. She then called me on her way home and we talked a little bit. She also asked me if I could cover for Kim from 11:00 hours to 14:30 hours. I said that was not a problem and then went back to bed. I was rocked out of bed at 10:01 hours when the fire pager went off for the Tanker to assist Company 21 with a working structure fire. I jumped out of bed and got my socks on, grabbed a shirt threw that on and tyhen got my jeans on. I grabbed my shoes, wallet, cell phone and pager and then my keys and ran out of the house. I jumped in my car and took off for the station. I got there and pulled in and when I got out I heard the Tanker running. I ran inside and kicked my shoes off and got my bunker pants on. I then put my jacket and helmet in the side compartment and got in the Tanker at the same time as Bubba was. We took off in the Tanker and I put us responding. Ray followed behind us to the scene. On the way up I sent Sue a text that I was heading to a structure fire and would call her when I was done. We got there and Engine 21, 26, Tanker 21, 26, Rescue 21, Truck 22, and Ambulance 6-3 were all on the scene when we got there. We parked and I got out and got my jacket on and told Bubba I was going to take a few pics with my cell phone for on the website. I took two pictures and talked to Tommy who was on with Medic 6. I then heaed over someone's radio that command wanted all available manpower to pack up and stage in front of Engine 21. I went back over to the Tanker and took my glasses and hearing aid out and put them in my little case and gave them to Bubba to put in the Tanker. He was told to turn around so he quickly handed me a mask and I gaive it to Ray while I grabbed my helmet and the air pack from the driver's side. I then got my hood on and got my jacket all zipped and closed up and then Ray helped me get my pack on. I then got the mask on and my helmet and gloves and went over and stood in staging. I then went in with a guy from Gratz and Chief 27 had command in the room we were in. I helped pull ceilings down and hit a few hot spots with the CAFS line off of Engine 21. We were then all ordered out of the structure so that the Fire Marshall could begin his investigation. While I was inside, Command transfered the Tanker to Station 21. Bubba told Tom Welker (who was command) that I was still inside. Tom told him that he could pick me up when the Tanker was released from stand-by, as they needed all the man power they could get. I then took my pack off and took the tank out and laid it on the tarp with the other ones to be filled. I spent that time to grab a drink from rehab, which turned out to be coffee, which I threw away and told them to get water. I then talked to Wertz who was sitting in the squad. I then went over to Truck 22 and talked to Matt and Zach who were both in the bucket and made the hole in the roof. Steve was also there talked to them and Tommy. Joey then came over and asked me if I was ready to get dirty again and I said yes. He then took me and a junior from his company into the one room and told us to shovel the insulation up and take it out of the house. I had the junior shovel the insulation while I started to throw the big shit out of the window onto the pile that was already started. I then heard them release the Tanker and county told them to come pick up their personnel on the scene. I worked inside for quite some time before Bubba got there and then I asked Joey if he needed me any more and he said no that they were good. So I went outside and Bubba asked me if I had gotten the cylinder filled and I said yes and he put my pack back together and then put it away and grabbed my mask while I went over to rehab and asked Tommy for a cup of water, since someone had brought them 4 gallon of water. He gave me the one gallon container as it was almost empty. I took a quite a few swigs and then dumped a little bit of it over my head to cool me down. We then left the scene and headed to Shell to get fuel and then headed back to the station. Once back at the station, I cleaned my mask and put it away and then Bubba did the report on the call. Ray had left and headed on home to try and get some sleep before he had to leave for work. Me and Bubba left a little after 12:30 hours and I headed on home. Once at home I got the mail and came inside and got out of my clothes and called Sue and told her that I was ready to take over. I then sat down in the chair and I had the fire pager open when I heard county dispatch Company 21 to another structure fire on Route 209. I headed back to my room and started getting dressed again as county told Chief 21 that Millersburg PD was on the scene with smoke pushing from the windows and eves of the house and that they could hear a crackling sound inside the house. Just as I was getting my jeans on the pager went off again for the Tanker to assist Company 21 on a working structure fire. I got back in my car and headed back up to the fire house, I got there and parked and ran inside and kicked my shoes off and got in my bunker pants again and then put my jacket and helmet in the side compartment again and got in the cab again with Bubba and we took off with Ray in tow behind us again. We got up to the scene and were told to take Level 1 staging, so we parked on a side road. They wanted all packed manpower to report in front of Engine 21 and all non-packed manpower to stay with their apparatus. I told Bubba I was going to go take some pictures with my cell phone again and he said ok. As I was walking towards the front of the house, I saw the Medic 6 gang in a huddle around something in the front yard of the house. As I got closer, I saw the cage laying on it's side in the yard and them working on a dog. I ran over to Tommy and saw that he was using a BVM. I told him that we carry the pet rescue mask on the Tanker and he asked if they could be used on a BVM and I said that I would check. So I ran back to the Tanker and yelled to Bubba that they were working on a dog and to bring the pet mask's. We got it hooked up to the BVM, but our efforts were unsuccessful. We then went back to the Tanker and stayed there until we were released. We headed back to the station again and I cleaned up the pet mask and Bubba put the report in again. Ray then left and me and Bubba left then and I headed on home. When I got home my mother was home and I finally got to eat something to lunch. I then got on the computer to do a few things. I then left the house at 17:30 hours and headed up to the fire house for bingo tonight. Bingo went good and afterwards a few of us sat around and shot the shit. I then left there around 22:10 hours and headed on home. Once at home Sue called me and we talked and then I took a shower around 23:20 hours. I am soon going to bed as I am tired.
