Busy Day with High Winds
I went to bed last night around 03:00 hours and got up this monring at 11:26 hours. I got out of bed and changed into street clothes. I then ate lunch and read the paper. I then headed up to the fire house around 12:30 hours for the firefighter 1 review class. I got up there and parked and went in the station. LeeAnn was sitting in there and her and me got talking about the accident on Friday. Lonny then came in, followed by Troy and Bubba. They asked me about the accident and I started telling them while Bubba got on the computer to print out times for the call on Friday. As he was finishing printing, the power flicked off and then back on in the station. We then heard Dave pull in and then we all headed up to the hall. Bill had just come in the station and he turned around and headed back up to the hall. Once up there, we asked Dave if we were going to need our gear and he said yes. So I we all went down to the station and got our gear and brought it back up to the hall. Then, myself, Lonny, and Troy went down and brought 3 air packs up. Alf came out also to get our applications. They started talking to us about the practical portion of the test and what we would need to do, when all of a sudden, all of our pagers went off for a tree on wires with fire on Creek Road in Jackson Township. We all got up and since our gear was in the hall, we got dressed there. I kicked my shoes off and stepped into my pants when the lights started to flick off and on again. Bubba yelled for someone to get down to the station to get the bay doors open before the power went out. Also the siren had stopped when the power flicked off and on. I got my pants on and then grabbed my jacket and helmet and headed on down to the station. Troy had already left as did LeeAnn, but we were not fast enough as by the time we got down there, the power was now off and we could not get the bay doors open. Troy then quickly grabbed the Little Giant ladder and pulled the emergency release handle on the door for the Engine and then me and Lonny pushed it up. Troy then went over and did the same to the door for the Tanker and he pushed it up. Bubba drove the Engine and I jumped in the officers seat and LeeAnn got in the back. Bubba told Lonny to bring the Tanker. Troy then got on top of the Tanker to pull the door the rest of the way back and to also move the bar out of the way so it would not damage the light bar. Once the Tanker was out, Jason pulled in and ran into the station to get his gear on. Troy jumped in the back of the Engine and we told Jason to go with Lonny in the Tanker. We went responding and we heard Dave go on locatoin. We got there and him and Jason Faust were sitting in his truck and my father was there also. We parked and there was one tree leaning on the wires and the top of the pole was starting to lean towards one side from the weight. Bubba checked the lines to make sure they were not hot and then we thought of a few ways to get the tree off the wires. Bubba suggested about cutting it at the bottom and seeing if that would be enough to make it fall off the lines. Jason Faust said he thought that would add extra weight to the lines and snap the top of the pole off. We then said about hooking a rope up to Dave's truck and pulling it off. We decided that would be our best bet. So we ended up sending my father back to the station to grab some rope that was laying there and bring it back to the scene. Meanwhile we talked to the one neighboor who said he had a medium sized tractor that we could use. We deciced to have him bring it down and we would tie the rope to that and have him pull it off. Meanwhile we got the chain saw down off the Engine and then my father got back with the rope. We got that all hooked up and the guy pulled it off the lines. We then cut some of the tree up and the guys said they would cut the rest of it up. We then put everything away and headed back to the station. We backed the Engine in and there was a lot of snow on various things in the station. The hood of the Utility had snow on it and some of the gear by the Tanker bay door had snow on it. We then had Lonny park the Tanker outside and then I grabbed a mult-purpose hook off of the Engine and used that to shut the Tanker door. Troy then hooked the bar back up to the door while Bubba stretched a extension cord from the generator on the Engine. Troy then set the ladder up to get to the motor for the door and plugged it into the extension cord and we used the generator to open the door, then had Lonny back the Tanker in and used it to shut the door. Jason then got up on the Engine and we did the same thing with that bay door. We then put everything away and then we headed back up to the hall to continue the review. Dave went over how to inspect the air pack and then we moved on to the dooning of the air pack. We praticed and I got it down to 1 minute and 1 second. He then went over a few other things and then we were done for the day. We cleaned up the face masks and changed out the cylinders on the packs and put everything away on the Utility. I then ran the 3 cylinders into Station 29 to get them filled. That took all of 5 minutes and then I headed back to the station. Once there I put the cylinders away and got back in my car and started towards home. I then noticed that the curtins were still open in the hall so I stopped in front of the hall to go in and fix them when the pager went off for Chief 216 to call Communications. I went inside and fixed the curtins and then got back in my car and went back down to the station and parked and sat in my car to wait for it. About a minute later, the pager went off to assist PSP with a tree down on Quarry Road in Jackson Township. I went inside and got my gear on and waited for Bubba, Troy, and Lonny to get up there. They got up there and I went around the back of the Engine and started the generator up awhile. Bubba then told me to take the Utilty while he handed me the extension cord. I took it up and threw it up to Troy who was on top of the Engine and he plugged it in to the motor and Jason opened the door up and Troy unplugged it and threw it back down. Ray had come in by that point and I told him to get in the Utility. The Engine pulled out and then we did. We got to the end of the alley when Dave put the box in service. So we turned around and I backed the Utility in and then Bubba backed the Engine in. Me and Ray were then fidling around with the generator on the Engine when the lights came back on and we closed the door and I took my gear off and then filled out a report for this. Bubba then got times and I finished filling out the reports and then he entered them into firehouse software. I left there around 19:20 hours and headed on home. Once at home I ate dinner and then took a shower. I am now getting ready to hit the old email and surf the net. I will be on late tonight so if any sexy ladies want to talk to me, just give me a buzz.
