The Demise of Medic 6
I went to bed Tuesday night around 01:30 hours and got up Wednesday morning at 07:10 hours when my alarm went off. I got out of bed and got dressed and then grabbed my digital camera and my suitcase and took them out to the kitchen. I then packed my lunch and got my Gatorade bottles together. I then left the house around 07:30 hours and headed up to Lykens to work. I stopped at the Tower Mini Mart and got a paper and then headed to the station. Once there I parked and took my stuff in. I sat my suitcase behind the couch and put my lunch box and Gatorade bottles in the fridge. I then clocked in and did a quick rig check on 6-7 and did my date checks on 6-8. I then filled out my paperwork and did a few things online while Tim slept on the couch. I then got off the computer and sat down to read the paper. Then around 10:20 hours the tones went off for a call in Washington Township. MICU 6-3 handeled that call and I went back to reading the paper. Once I was done reading the paper, I turned the TV on and watched the Discovery Channel. Then around 11:54 hours the tones went off for an ALS call in Upper Paxton Township at SLV. Wertz took that in the squad. I then ate lunch and then Tim said about heading over to Gratz to walk around some. Once I was done eating lunch, we got in 6-7 and headed over to the fair grounds. We got there and there was hardly any cars there. We went inside the gate and nothing was opened. The head of security saw us and asked us if we needed the First Aid Station opened up and we said no and then we asked him what time the fair opened and he said 16:00 hours. So we got back in 6-7 and I said to Tim about stopping at Geovion's to eat lunch and he said that was fine. So we stopped and I had two slices of pizza and mozzerlia sticks. We then headed back to the Lykens station. We got back and I backed the unit in and then about 5 minutes later, Tim stuck his head in and asked me to move 6-7 out so John Schultz could get the Tanker out to take it to get some air in the one tire. I moved 6-7 out and parked it in the parking lot and said I was going to leave it out until he got back with the Tanker. We then went in and sat down and watch "The Love Guru" on DVD. Then around 15:30 hours I believe it was, the tones went off again for another call in Upper Paxton Township at SLV for ALS. 6-3 handeled that call with 13. Then around 16:45 hours Tim said about heading over to the fair again as it should be open by now and I said sure as I would grab something for dinner there. So we got in 6-7 and headed towards Gratz. Tim called Jim to let him know and Jim said something to Tim about not being able to find a medic to cover the open overnight ALS shift in Eville, and said that we should come down to the Eville station before the 20:00 shift change, and Tim said ok. So we were on Specktown Road heading to Gratz when we saw traffic in front of us slow down at the one curve in the road. Once we got around the curve, we saw up by the next intersection, an SUV sitting acorss the southbound lane and we could clearly see the side air bags delpoyed in the SUV. So I switched on the lights and Tim called into County and reported the accident. I then got out and went up and talked to the driver of the SUV while Tim went and talked to the lady and little girl from the Sedan. Once she said that she was fine and didn't want to be chcked out, I called county and asked them to dispatch PSP and Fire Police to the scene. The about a minute later I asked for the fire company to be dispatched also for fluid contorl. I got a refusal on the little girl from the Sedan once the mother got there and then the lady from the SUV wanted me to check her left side and I got her to sign a refusal also. Once the fire company got there we talked to Harry and told him what was up and then once we made sure that they didn't need us anymore, we went available and continued to the fairgrounds. We got there and parked and then stopped at the first aid station. Bruce and Pam were there and we talked while Tim smoked. Me and Tim then went down the midway looking at the different food stands. Once we got to the end we turned around and headed on back. I stopped and got to slices of cheese pizza and a bottle of Sprite and Tim got a hot sausage. We then sat down and ate and then Pam and Carl saw us and came over and we talked for a few minutes and then they went to get food and we went back to the first aid station and sat until they got back. We then talked for a few more minutes and then we got in 6-7 and headed back to Lykens. Once back at Lykens we watched TV until around 19:45 hours. We then locked the med bag up in the cabinet and then I gather evrything of mine up and we both got in our cars and headed down to the Eville station. I got there and parked and we went inside and as soon as we walked in, the tones went off for an ALS call in Williams Township. Tim went responding in the squad and met Williamstown while they were enroute to Evangelical Hospital. I put my Gatorade bottles in the fridge and then sat down to watch TV with Stutzman. He then ran up to McDonald's and got something to eat for breakfast. We then watched the new episode of Mythbusters at 21:00 hours. I then logged my two refusals at 22:00 hours and Tim got back around 22:30 hours. Stutzman got back up once Tim got back and we got talking. That was when he told me that the President of the Board, Mr. Robb Wentzel basically told Boyer that effective, October 19th, there will no longer be a BLS truck during the day in Eville. He thinks just becuase it looks good on paper, that two MICU's can completelt cover our entire territory. He also basically told the part times that they are now only being kept to cover for any full time that would take PTO or call off sick and to do special events. It gets even better. We were suppoed to get a 15% raise at the beginning o the year, well that got shot down. It is also roumored that the board is looking to do away with 12 hour shifts and make it a minimum of a 24 hour shift. I was so worked up over this, and actually all of us were. I finally went to sleep around 01:30 hours and got up this morning at 07:45 hours when Steve came in. I got the stuff back in my belt and put my pillow away. I then filled out my time card and then clocked out and headed on home. Once at home I changed into pj's and went back to bed to get some more sleep. I got up this afternoon around 12:00 hours. I got out of bed and ate lunch while I read the paper. I then called Bubba as when I talked to him last night he said that he had a greenhouse to wash out today. I called him around 12:30 hours and he said that he wasn't ready yet. So I got on the computer to do a few things. I finally called Bubba around 15:30 hours and told him I had a County EMA meeting tonight and had to leave around 18:00 hours and wasn't going to be able to help him. He said that was fine that he would get it himself. I then ate dinner and left the house around 17:50 hours and headed on down to Steelton to the County Comm Center for the meeting. The meeting and training lasted less then an hour and we were out of there before 20:00 hours. I then stopped at Giant and picked up some iced tea for my parents and then stopped at the fire house and did my weekly checkes on the medical bags and equipment on the trucks. I then headed on home. Once at home I took a shower and then had a light snack. I am soon going to bed as I am tired.
